Uninstall an SCCM Primary Site

June 2, 2019 by Aaron Rothstein

If you have migrated to a new SCCM environment or to Intune, uninstalling your old SCCM Primary Site is a good practice because it performs Active Directory object cleanup (example.corp > System > System Management). Here’s how.

Before you uninstall the SCCM Primary Site

  1. Remove all secondary sites before uninstalling the primary site.
  2. Remove all site system servers for the primary site.

Uninstall the SCCM Primary Site

  1. Sign-in to the Primary Site server and open Programs and Features.
  2. Right-click System Center Configuration Manager Primary Site Setup and click Uninstall/Change.

  3. The System Center Configuration Manager Setup Wizard opens. Click Next.

  4. On the Getting Started screen, Select the last option: Uninstall this Configuration Manager Site. Click Next.

  5. You are given the option to retain the primary site database or leave the Configuration Manager console installed. Because we are retiring the SCCM site, we will leave these unchecked. Your requirements may differ, so make your own decision here. Click Next.

  6. You are prompted to confirm you want to uninstall the primary site. Click Yes.
  7. The uninstall process proceeds automatically. Uninstall time will vary based on your environment. You will see in the example below it took 50 minutes. Click Close to exit the wizard.

  8. The site is uninstalled. You can confirm Active Directory objects were removed by opening Active Directory Users and Computers and navigating to the built-in OU example.corp/System/System Management. There should be no existing objects referencing the site you just removed.
